The Christmas after Colin died it felt like a sad idea to join my mother and for us to be in Devon where we'd be surrounded by all that was lost, so we decided to decamp to California, where my brother's been based for many years. My girlfriend Georgina and I then decided to go a bit earlier and make more of a trip of it before joining my mum and brother for Christmas. In and around that we found ourselves plodding among some big rocks and small ones too in Joshua tree desert (best known in my mind for the comic half-arsed attempt to burn the corpse of Gram Parsons by his manager), and I found my mind meandering around my memory of Colin, his influence on me, and his role in the framework of my Bridge, Weeds and House projects. And I thought that these rocks in front of me make a lovely closing and counterpoint to that sequence of works - the fourth part of the trilogy. Quickly and without ceremony I photographed all the ones that looked good and were of roughly the right shape to fill the frame as completely as possible without losing any of their extremeties, thereby prompting the question: is it big or little?
